Wasteland Border Inspector - Chapter 820
Chapter 820: Chapter 269: Core
Yu Erlan looked Cheng Ye up and down, frowning slightly, but didn’t say much.
The two of them went upstairs to the third floor, one after the other. The data from the lighting equipment had already been extracted and was being installed in Yu Yong’s containment cell by the staff.
As expected, a strange, mocking voice immediately sounded:
“Hahaha, kid, it’s only been a few days, and how come you’re in a worse state than me?”
“Let me see, containment chains made from Happiness Alloy! Wow, you’re really getting the VIP treatment. Even I, a Fire Researcher and Source Binder of the Anti-state origin, am not qualified to wear these. You sure have more clout than me, makes one envious!”
“See, was I right? If you keep working with Happiness City, it’s only a dead end for you. Why not join my camp? We’ll turn Happiness City upside down for some real fun!”
“You’re not speaking and not looking at me, I know you’re angry. But so what? At most, you can come in here and pin me against the wall for a beating, making me suffer for a couple of days. But who will know about your pain?”
Yu Yong lay on the wall of the containment cell, laughing maniacally while sticking out his tongue to show a patch of bizarre, liver-colored tissue.
It was covered with spiders, densely packed, making one’s skin crawl.
He seemed completely deranged, the human part of him fading, and the madness from the infection source growing stronger.
“It’s an irreversible process, every damage to the body deepens his fusion progress.”
Yu Erlan watched Yu Yong’s frenzied state expressionlessly, her tone cold, “Every damage to the body deepens his fusion progress. Now his fusion rate has exceeded 120%, strictly speaking, he’s no longer a Source Binder, but a pure Infected Body.”
“Can the fusion rate exceed 100%?” Cheng Ye was somewhat puzzled.
“Yes,” Yu Erlan explained, “Your fusion rate is at 99%, which means the infection source has only eroded your body and hasn’t completely taken over your mind, so you are a Source Binder. Once the fusion rate exceeds 100%, you move towards becoming an Infected Body, and over 120%, you’re no longer within the human category.”
“So that’s what it means.”
Cheng Ye nodded in realization, turning his gaze to the frenzied Yu Yong inside the containment cell, “So, does that mean I don’t have many opportunities left to torment him?”
“That doesn’t matter, even if the fusion rate goes up to the full value of 200%, it doesn’t matter,” Yu Erlan’s tone was calm, “We only need to hand him over to Firewood completely, whether he’s human or an Infected Body doesn’t concern us.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Yu Yong’s madness grew more severe, spewing out jumbled words that couldn’t even form complete sentences.
Only a few key phrases could be vaguely discerned… “object,” “serious consequences,” “everyone will be buried,” “merge with the origin,” “giant,” “next era,” “glorious age”…
Huh? Why do these words sound so much like the Starship’s propaganda slogans?
Cheng Ye rubbed his chin, surreptitiously opened a panel to take a peek at the compatibility rate, which was still a chilling 0%.
If he could break this limitation, should he take the chance to gather intel and see if this defecting Firewood researcher has any secret ties with the Starship?
While he was pondering this, Yu Erlan’s watch suddenly beeped: “Director Yu, the light source parameters have been imported, would you like to activate it?”
“No need, let me go in first,” Cheng Ye spoke.
“Alright!”
Yu Erlan nodded. Without any visible action on her part, the chains on Cheng Ye’s wrists and ankles automatically detached, floating to the side.
Soon, the sound of footsteps was heard from downstairs as several researchers came up carrying the previously used padded clothing and armor.
Once Cheng Ye was suited up in his battle armor, a researcher handed him a red button, “Inspector Cheng, this is the button to activate the light source.”
“Thank you.”
Cheng Ye took the button, and under the astonished gazes of everyone, a cruel smile slowly spread across his face.
Even before the containment cell door was fully opened, he bent over and charged inside, greeted warmly like he was coming home, shouting:
“Researcher Yu, I’m here again!”
